Transparently Communicating in Times of Uncertainty

By Maddie Clair

President Donald Trump’s second term began with a rapid succession of executive orders and policy shifts, reshaping federal priorities across sectors. These sweeping actions have introduced significant uncertainty, especially for organizations dependent on federal funding or oversight, including many clients we serve at IMG.

Each major announcement has triggered a cascade of reactions, media analysis, legal challenges, legislative scrutiny, and, most importantly, confusion among leaders and stakeholders about what these changes mean for their organizations.

This cycle of announcement and subsequent reaction has caused a culture of uncertainty for organizations across the country. For many, it is unclear which Executive Orders will be upheld or struck down by the judicial branch, or how to interpret and implement the specifics of these policy changes.

This persistent state of ambiguity has made organizational leadership amidst chaos a more challenging task. Leaders have been confronted with the difficult question: “What do we say when the honest answer is, ‘I don’t know’?”

At IMG, we are adept at helping clients navigate times of uncertainty, and have decades of experience transparently communicating amidst changing policies and regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.

We guide our clients through periods of uncertainty by focusing on these core strategies:

Identify Potential Impacts

For many, times of uncertainty breed frustration and fear. Before reacting, take the time to fully understand the new policies, and then work to outline all potential scenarios and their implications.

Acknowledge the Ambiguity

Transparency builds trust. When the path forward is unclear, it is better to share your uncertainty, and, simultaneously, your commitment to finding a clear path forward. Acknowledging the future impacts of policy changes and identifying pragmatic solutions positions your organization as a credible, steady voice amid the noise.

Communicate Critical Developments as Needed

The landscape is evolving rapidly. Track policies and orders as they unfold, and prepare messages and strategies as necessary. When there are moments that provide clarity on the path forward, communicating them to key stakeholders is invaluable to continuing to build trust.

Frame Communications Around Adaptability, and Pivot to Goals

Rather than focusing solely on the unknowns, emphasize your organization’s readiness to respond as the situation develops. Each Executive Order or policy shift is an opportunity to reaffirm your organization’s commitment to your advocacy priorities, and/or your organizational or business goals. Pivoting to these key messages reassures stakeholders that you are proactive and resilient, even in uncertain times.

It is more crucial than ever to remain nimble and ready to communicate the unexpected, unprecedented, and uncertain. By embracing these core strategies, leaders and organizations can foster transparent communication with all stakeholders, building lasting trust and confidence for the road ahead.
